Have I ever told you about the time that I went to a Royals baseball game during college with a best friend who was trying to figure out if this guy was a player or really into her and I ended up being the third wheel on a date/not date that wouldn’t ever freaking end? Oh I haven’t you say? This is basically my favorite baseball pastime. Let’s go down the memory lane known as this and how a top from Gordman’s reminded me of it.
So it’s one hot spring date in Kansas City and one of my best friends asks me to go to a Royals baseball game with her. And a guy. A cute guy. But a cute guy who was leaving his feelings ambiguous and she needed help figuring out what his deal was. Sometimes he would pay for lunch, sometimes he wouldn’t, sometimes would open the door, sometimes was just a jerk, yadayadadayada. So my very advanced skills of being a third wheel and having no social inhibitions were called upon and I went on the weirdest date/non-date tennis match sort of thing that day.
We get into the car. No doors are opened for anyone. At this point I’m all, “NO doors open = no date.”
I sit in the backseat, like the good third wheel that I am. He casually smacks gum. I casually feel myself already disliking him with every obnoxious gum smack. My mind, “Gum smack = No date.” So far so good. Definitely didn’t like the guy, definitely didn’t have to worry about my friend liking him because I could sway her against him.
But then, he puts his arm on her seat in the car and just like casually touches her shoulder. Date status. Frick. Ugh, I can’t tell if she’s into it because I’m in the backseat. I wonder if this is how kids feel when they are in the backseat and all the good stuff is happening in the front row.
Here’s the rest of the tennis match of date/no date:
- Date – He paid for her ticket
- No date – He asked both of us to pay for parking
- Date – Bought her a drink
- No date – Ate a hot dog and made eye contact while doing so
- Date – Arm around her shoulder
- No date – He smacked more gum
- Date – Smiled, winked, laughed
- No date- Slightly tense argument about long-term life plans
Oh and that guy? Yeah no, he was kicked to the curb on the next date/non-date because well, he decided to dump my friend MID DATE FOR ANOTHER DAT HE JUST PICKED UP AT A BAR. So yeah, bullet dodged.

lol funny story and your friend lucked out cause he sounds like a jerk. You look adorable and love the baby blue sandals.

I was a 9th wheel once. I went to a school that was 85% male, so I spent a ton of time hanging out with my guy friends because, you know, numbers. One of them organized a trip down to NYC to see an opera at the Met and invited me to go and I was like YES, and so we booked 4 hotel rooms for the group (with enough people to have 2-3 people per room) and were excited and all that. My then-fiance was deployed to Iraq, so my friends were eager to keep me social and happy and distracted.
So then I meet up with everyone for dinner beforehand and I realize that some people had dropped out of the event and I was sitting at a table with FOUR COUPLES.
I remember how they all basically argued with one another and drew straws as to who would take me in for the night (math: 4 couples, 4 rooms, and 1 Aubrey) because all the guys were hoping to get laid because apparently panties drop for opera. I ended up crying myself to sleep in a bed while one of my guy friends (who caved and wouldn't leave me hanging) was berated by his bitchy girlfriend. (They later broke up, and the guys apologized formally for treating me that way, but seriously BROS BEFORE HOS even though I'm a girl, right???) I remember waking up as early as decent, getting dressed, and ditching that hotel room ASAP to get back to school. But not before one of the other dudes bought me an apology breakfast before I went to the train. Because I MADE THEM ALL PAY.
The happy ending to this story is that the guy who took me in that night is still my friend, over 10 years later (same with the rest of the guys, actually), and he is married to a lovely, kind lady who insists that we ALL meet up whenever we are near one another. And on one of those occasions, my husband couldn't join us, and instead of being 3rd wheel she made me the center of attention and we had a ball. He picked a good one.

LOL at the story (especially eating a hot dog with eye contact), so glad you were there so your friend dodged the bullet! Loving this look on you, perfect for a spring time baseball game. I can't wait to see the Royals stadium, my husband is a Chiefs fan so we want to go to KC in September where we can catch a Royals and Chiefs game <3

Yikes, he sounds like a real winner. You're a good friend to tag along and assess the situation (plus at least you got some baseball and stadium snacks out of the deal). I never thought about checking out Gordman's for more Royal's gear, but I need some, so I'll have to hit them up!

Wow what a story! I've been third wheel a couple times for vetting purposes and hated it every time. What do I know? Nothing! Not to mention I am a fairly awkward person already so as a 3rd wheel it's amplified like 100x.
Whitney Damrau
A good guy wouldn't leave a girl hanging in limbo, but sadly we've all been there. You're a trooper for hanging in there the whole time, i would have grabbed a cab home. As for baseball games, my husband is a big fan of the game. I go for the food.

Yeah, No date! Not datin'! Not datin' him ever! Smack, smack, snort! lol That's what I think about this guy that I've never even met, who talked and smacked his gum all at once. Talk about mixed sandels, err…signals. Sandels? Yes! I LOVE your sandels, they're so cute & go perfectly with this baseball story telling tale. You must have liked this friend to go on a date with her and give your honest opinion. That or you just couldn't say no! lol Either way as always, I love reading your blog, seeing what you're wearing and enjoying every minute of it. Next……btw send the sandals and no one gets hurt. What did you say? You've heard that before? Can I help it if you and I have great taste in shoes. love ya darling and thank you for brightening my day as always

Sounds like a little date adventure, and probably far more fun to reminisce about than it might have been at the time.

Ugh; dating in college was the worst. In fact, I'd call it 'dating / non-dating' because of so many scenarios like you described. Men are too dense to know what's what at that age, and us ladies are (usually) too unsure of ourselves and the whole situation at large to just GTFO.
Great outfit, though. π Love the baseball top!

Elegance and Mommyhood
You always have the best and most fun stories and this one started from a simple baseball tee lol. Love the skirt and sandals so much. I might have to pick up that date. Your score card of date/non date is very accurate, except I don't mind a guy eating a hot dog.
I am so glad I stopped by today and my early afternoon was made lol.
I have started a linkup on Thursdays. I would love for you to join it by linking up this pretty outfit tomorrow and every Thursday. Thanks and enjoy your day! Ada. =)
