I love my curls. I didn’t always. I’ve had so many hairstylists butcher my hair and send me out crying and without an apology. I freak out every summer because I slightly turn into Monica from Friends when she goes to the Bahamas. My hair doesn’t fit under baseball caps and I love that. I love that it connects all of my sisters together and there’s no mistaking we are related (all 4 girls). I love that it sets me apart, even though I have been told hundreds of times to straighten it to look more “professional” I refuse. I have curly hair and I don’t care. It’s who I am. My only wish? I wish I had my mothers natural, vibrant red hair! I swoon over fiery red curls!
I get a lot of comments, in real life and in the blogging world, about my hair. What I do to take care of it, who cuts it and I just decided to make this into a post. You can view products I use on this page.
Washing- I wash at the most once a week. Curly hair is naturally dryer so it needs to build up its natural oils. I love Palmer’s coconut deep conditioner every once in a while as well. It’s cheap and gives you an amazing shine and condition.
Styling- Your hair is going to look amazing for 10 minutes and then fall. It’s just reality. Accept that and then learn how it falls and what sides go flatter. This kind of information is what I tell my stylish when getting a haircut. The wind will make your hair never look right and everyone loves to watch curls fly in your face. These are things that you cannot change. You move on and then you follow my tips here.
Cut- Learn when your curls are at their prime. I have my best curls when medium length. How did I find that out? Mistakes. I thought that straight hair cuts would totally work for curly hair. They don’t. Nothing about straight hair relates to yours. Straight hair people think you guys basically have the same hair. IT’S NOT THE SAME!
I hope this helps all of you who are struggling!

Love your curls! I straighten my hair very rarely. And I almost feel insulted when people go nuts over it because it's like they're saying they don't like it curly.

Your curls are gorgeous, and I can say we all take a while to learn how to deal with our own hair. Going to phases of really, awful hair cuts and not knowing how to get it to look it's best. Thankfully we've figured it out!

Your curls are so pretty and I think it's awesome that you refuse to straighten your hair!
Your colorblock cardi is really cute…was it a recent Target purchase?

Confession – whenever I click on a new blog and the blogger has curly hair, I pretty much just love her right away. I guess I'm totally biased, but I don't know very many people in real life who have hair like me, so it's fun to have a little group online to relate to! I 100% agree with your first paragraph (except I only have 2 sisters).
It is crazy the things that complete strangers will say. I frequently get asked if it's permed (and I want to ask if their bleached blonde is natural), or if I'm biracial (as if curly hair is reserved for certain ethnicity groups?), and then the person usually says something like "I bet you wish your hair was straight!" and then I feel awkward "um, no, I actually like it…" as I walk away.
Random story – The other day at Panera, the cashier girl told me she loved my curls and that she had curly hair but it was really ugly. It just made me so sad. She had a baseball cap on and then a bun, so I couldn't see her hair to argue with her. I just told her I bet her hair is prettier than she thinks, and to keep trying different products, because it took me awhile to get it right.

I'll tell you again how jealous of your curly hair I am… I've always wanted curls, or at least waves. My hair is naturally stick straight and hardly holds a curl unless my hair is shorter like it is right now. I'm sure it takes a little while to learn what works for curly hair, just like it took me almost 22 years to decide which cuts and products worked best for my straight hair.

You have gorgeous curly hair! Can totally relate to the curly hair issues even though my hair is more textured than yours. The ombre cardi is cute and that statement necklace is so pretty. Loving the pink and gray combo.

I would kill for your hair. I have a little bit of natural curl in my hair but definitely not enough to do THAT. I wish it would though, it looks very sassy!

I totally know how you feel about your hair. My curls and I sort of have a love hate relationship, but after 26 years, we have finally come to a mutual understanding- it does what it wants and I accept that. I have found that not washing my hair is really helpful- I use shampoo about once a week, and then the other times I only condition it. And I see a major difference! Also, I use the Bumble and Bumble deep conditioner and it is AMAZING. Like seriously. Also, finding the right person who can cut curly hair is really important too. Some can cut curly hair, and some just can't. And there is a HUGE difference. Also product… what do you use? I've been using Tresemme Curl Care mousse for probably 10 years now, and it is the best. It has just enough hold to make it not frizz, but not so much that then it gets that crunchy look.
How many times do people ask you "have you ever straightened your hair?" I always want to say "Wow, you know you are the first person to ever ask me that!"
I love reading about other curly girls maintenance! I think your hair looks adorable (as does your outfit!)

I love that you actually wear your hair curly. So many girls who have natural hair like this straighten or curl it everyday. That's not "embracing" it at all! haha
Lisa - respect the shoes
The grass is always greener on the other side, isn't it? I've got stick straight hair and have always wanted some curls, waves, body. You look great with your hair the way it is!

I love love love this outfit! I always struggle with styling jeans to look super cute, but this is adorable. And that necklace is gorgeous! Also you have beautiful hair. I always wished that I had inherited my mom's naturally curly hair and my dad's red hair. I would love to have fiery red curls! But instead I have wavy brownish hair. Oh well!

THIS IS A GREAT BLOG THAT HAS SOME REAL THOUGHTS AND CONCERNS ABOUT YOUNG WOMEN TRYING TO MAKE IT IN THIS WORLD.GREAT IDEA ALISSA… YOU ARE SHOWING YOUR SKILLS IN AN EXCELLENT WAY.

As a girl with curly hair, I can definitely agree: it took me awhile to love my curls. But even when I didn't love them, if someone offered to do something that I thought even had the chance of taking them away, I freaked out. Who would I be without curly hair? Get this. After 24 years of living in Chicago, I had my curls down. I knew how to style and how and who to have cut them. Then I move to San Francisco. UM. Everything has changed! I still haven't figured it out a year and a half later. I really hope it doesn't take me more years. EEK!
