Dear Class of 2017,
You’re about to move onto campus and be blissfully unaware of how much sweat and tears you are going to put into the next four years of your life. You think that you sailed through high school and college just a tad harder. Seniors, like me, will glare at you and you will wonder why. We are glaring at you because you have no idea what is about to happen to you. I’m here to help you, listen to me my precious. You need to know these 5 things before the first day of classes.
1. The Freshman 15 Are No Longer the Freshman 15.
It’s not the freshman 15 anymore. It’s the freshman 20, sophomore 15, etc. Everyone warns you about the dreaded curse, you ignore it and say you are going to be able to rise above it all. YOU will be the one who manages to get in 17 hours of school, a part-time job and workout every single day. Sophomore year it gets more stressful and suddenly it’s not so cute to realize that its NOT just 15 anymore. Trust me. Walk the hill. Watch the calories. Don’t eat Chinese every night at 3 am. You will thank me later.
2. No One Cares.
You aren’t at home. No one cares if you can’t manage your time properly. Your teacher doesn’t care if your parents are wealthy or you were a straight-A high school student. This is college. High school is history. Don’t bring it up, you will not be liked if you do. No one cares that you didn’t get your homework done. Your grades are your own problem. The sooner you realize this the better you will do. It’s a hard lesson but it has to be learned.
4. Learn Time Management.
The greatest thing college has taught me is time management. Time is the most precious commodity there is. It is unforgiving and you can’t make up for it. Learn to say no to your friends when you need to study. If they are your real friends they will understand. Put your time first. Your GPA will show it. Learn how to divide everything into chunks and not feel overwhelmed when 30 things are happening at once.
4. Pack your lunch.
Do you know how much a salad is on campus? $7.00. Pizza is $5 without a drink. You do the math and add that up x 5 days a week. Panda Express is cool but so is having money for those dollar nights or emergencies. (Dollar night at the bar is NOT an emergency.) It’s going to take an extra 5 minutes at night in the the morning to save hundreds of dollars during the semester. Time = money.
5. You Will Never Regret Working Hard
At the end of every semester I think about what I wish I could have done better, what I did wrong, etc. I’ve regretted not spending as much energy on Italian, not having enough money by not taking a second job, etc. I’ve never regretted the late nights, study sessions at the libraries over holidays and being the first person in the library on the weekends. You’ll regret not putting in enough energy but you will NEVER regret working hard.
Maddie
I agree with everything you have said, time management is definitely what I am using a lot, because I am studying + working a part time job at H&M, sometimes it gets so overwhelming!

Cash management. I think there should be a requisite course for my college kids. There is a huge leap between high school, college and rest-of-life when it comes to money. It's hard to transition from your parents pretty much paying for everything to living on your own and realizing that towels and bathmats and coffee tables aren't free! Bleh!

I am a rising senior in High School and I thought your tips were helpful! Although I still have a year of school left, I can only imagine what college must be like! You should definitely do a mini-guide to college on your blog. ๐

I really wish I'd been able to read something like this going into college… maybe it wouldn't have taken me so long (and so much money!) to get a degree!
P.S. I'm giving away 5 sponsor spots this week on my blog and I'd love for you to come and enter!

I love this! Honestly, there are very few things I would do different looking back at collegeโthere were some tough moments (like my entire first semester spent homesick), but everything was a learning experience. At the end of the day, I graduation a much stronger, more secure person with an amazing amazing group of friends I'm so thankful for!

Ah, college! Some of the most fun years of my life, but I'm very glad to be done with it. I actually lost weight my freshman year, because I was poor, and didn't like the cafeteria food AT ALL, and was walking everywhere.
I always tell people to try finding a job where they can study. I worked at a hotel gift shop, which didn't pay a whole lot, but I could read and study about 90% of the time I was working. Then when I went home at the end of my shift, I didn't have to study as much. It would have been much harder to manage my time if I had worked at a restaurant or something.

This is great advice! My advice for college would just be to enjoy it to the fullest. There truly is no other time in your life like college and I definitely miss aspects of it!

You have some very good points, and they could easily apply to all life after high school. Your life and time are your own, you get out what you put in.
But I didn't gain weight that one year of college, I lost weight because I disliked the food and walked everywhere. I had no money at all, so I never ate out.

Great post. I actually wish I had made more of my college experience (I worked a lot during college). You look so adorable in these pictures!

What a beautiful dress! Love the jean jacket too! And you are SO right. NO ONE CARES ABOUT WHAT OR WHO YOU WERE IN HS. College is a new time, you can be who you want. Straight A students might be the ones who flunk out etc. etc.! And learning time management is so key!

This is amazing advice, and makes me so reminiscent! Best of luck with your senior year!

Oh, I agree with all of these points. Learning time management was such a big thing for me too. I'm starting senior year too next month, and it's wild to think that we're already giving advice to the class of 2017! Wow!

Love this! It is so dang hard for me to be looking at college retrospectively now, but these are great tips. I love #2 especially, HA! College definitely taught me a lot about time management. I'm just hoping I haven't forgotten all I've learned now that I have some extra time!! This is a great classic/fun look! I love those shoes especiallly!
Hope your semester is off to a great start Alissa!
and hey- thanks for following my blog Twitter!

I always packed lunches–I got sick of sandwiches, but it was definitely worth it for the cost! I think it's a big realization for a lot of students when they figure out that their professors are totally okay with failing them from the class–a lot of profs, anyways, don't seem to show any motivation to help their students succeed unless the students themselves are proactive in seeking help!

You have such a cute blog! I love the colors and layout. ๐ I totally agree with your advice! And number 1 is so true. Oh my gosh. LOL. Love your cute dress and jean jacket! <3

I agree with all of the above! I tell everyone, "I went into college thinking I knew everything, I came out knowing I know nothing." Well, not really nothing, but you know what I mean! College is a humbling experience in which you do the things you swore you'd never do (some good, some bad) and come out a much better person for it. My advice to anyone going into it is to be open to new people and experiences, and let go of high school, because opportunities like this do not come often. And be open to the fact that you WILL come out of it a different, better, version of yourself. So say "yes" when a classmate asks you to go to lunch, go to your professors' office hours, take advantage of the free stuff while you can (like the campus gym!), and go to the interest meeting for a club or two (even if it means going alone – that's the point! You'll make friends there!)
Also, I am way out of college now, but my biggest pet peeve as a senior taking a 101-level class to fill a random, long-forgotten gen ed requirement was when the freshmen would all start packing up (slamming books shut, putting on coats, zipping up book bags, etc) the minute before the class was supposed to get out. I wanted to punch someone. It's noisy and completely disrespectful to your professor and everyone around you. I don't care how far away your next class is, there is no rush. This isn't high school where the bell is going to ring and you have 3 minutes to get to your next class. If you absolutely must leave, get up and do so quietly, without disturbing anyone. If you have a scheduling problem, go to the registrar and fix it. Even if the prof "goes over" the allotted time for the class, remember that you owe them respect. By senior year, you will be getting coffee with your professors, going to their office hours, spending late nights in a lab with them working on research, or glancing out the window only to realize that it's been two hours since class "let out" but your whole class is still wrapped up in an intense conversation with the prof, and no one wants to leave. And it will be awesome.
