I, like you probably, was very excited when I saw the commercials for the much anticipated NM+Target collaboration that hit the stores early December. I didn’t rush into the store but a few days later I had to pick something up so I wandered to the display.
Holy. Freaking. Cow. Batman.
My head was spinning. Why is there a Oscar De La Renta dog bowl but no clothing from him? Tory Birch did a lunch pail and canister both which cost at least $40? Why are Jason Wu dresses for little girls $60? Wait, they think I am going to pay $500 for a bike at Target? This men’s sweater is $70 and feels like sandpaper? I’M SO CONFUSED ABOUT LIFE!
I have no issues with Target clothing, I love them. When they had Isaac Mizrahi I adored it, I still have some of that clothing because it was quality. My issue is this, the collection was so heavily advertised, so hyped that whenever you see that beautiful, but horribly made, Lela Rose dress that was $100, everyone knows you got it at Target.
I love Target, but when I spend that much money I like to shop at stores I consider nicer than Target. I realize that for those who regularly shop at Neiman Marcus, this is a great buy for something that is made of QUALITY and is unique. For those of us who don’t have that money but still expect even a little bit of quality in clothing, it was sad.
This point is even more proven when you realize that they marked it down to 70% this week, those that DID buy the collection at $100 for a dress, (which had HORRIBLE reviews) I would think feel a little miffed since the collection was never supposed to go on sale. The collection was so marketed that everyone knows where that dress came from, which again, is not always a bad thing, but we all know it was from the failed Target+Neiman Marcus collection that no one bought until it was on sale.
The sweater that I bought is actually a men’s. Can we be honest about it? It feels like sandpaper. It feels like $20 (originally $70) sandpaper and is already having issues. I feel bad for those people who bought the sweater at $70 and realize when they go to buy milk and eggs, oh hey, your really horrible sweater is now 70% and probably going to go even lower. I got it for $20 and regret it, it’s cheap feeling and a disappointment.
The bottom line is this, it sucked and make zero sense. For those who shop at Target, it was completely out of touch with their consumers, below their quality standards and quite frankly, was a complete disconnect. Sure I want stuff that Jason Wu and Marc Jacobs created but do I really want Jason Wu ornaments? A Derek Lam skateboard? Why did Oscar De La Renta design a dog bowl but not a dress? Why was the purse he designed so bad? For those who shop at Neiman Marcus, they bought clothing that was never supposed to go on sale, the clothing quality from their favorite brands was below that of a grocery store/clothing store which competes with Walmart. The whole point in my mind of shopping at Neiman Marcus is that you are buying something that not just everyone will have.
P.S. Time Magazine wrote about it here as well as Fashionista and Business Insider did as well

Sigh. I feel the same way. I was SO excited for this collection, but was oh so disappointed. Even at 70%, I couldn't bring myself to buy anything. I thought about it. But walked away. With the heavy discount, the Target near me still has a full stock of everything. No one is buying it. So sad. Hopefully they learn from this and the next collaboration they do will be amazing.

This is how I feel about all of the collabs and why I NEVER go on opening day or even think about buying anything before it hits the clearance rack. I maybe wanted the tori burch sequined top and matching dessert plates, but that's all.
I hate all the hype and inflated prices just because some designer has slapped their name on it.

(and I didn't get them because neither were to be found when i went to target this weekend.)

Such good points well made! Sucks that the sweater feels like sandpaper…but it does look cute…if that helps π

I totally agree! Which is probably why now everything is 70% off because none of it sold! I wasn't that impressed with the collection either.

I agree with you as well. It is sad that it failed so badly and I would have been upset if I paid full price for any of it. I picked up the Proenza sweatshirt and I must say I do love it, but I only paid $9 for it and probably wouldn't have paid full price.
If it helps, your outfit does look great on you (even if it does feel like sandpaper!).

I completely agree with you! Such a total disappointment. I tried on that sequin top and the black lace dress when I saw them marked down to 70% off but I didn't get either one. They're cute but like you said, everyone knows that it came from Target and wouldn't be special. I'd rather spend my money on something unique that not everyone has. And everything was SO overpriced for the poor quality, which is probably why they didn't sell out of everything like the Missoni collab last year (which was much better priced).

Someone who gets me! I felt the same way and was a little confused with the items created for the collaboration. I purchased the Marc Jacobs scarf and actually have been in love with it, but felt it was over-priced, sure enough I saw it 2 weeks later marked down 50% and wanted to kick myself for not waiting.
Although it has the name Neiman Marcus associated with it, the reason items were "affordable" is because they are made of poorer quality. I think it is silly how people gave a lot of the items horrible reviews when the items themselves are clearly going to be made of cheaper quality and materials than if they were made for a Neiman Marcus Department store. I can sort of understand the items made because they were intended to be gifts for the holidays, but the sale price shows how overpriced everything was.
I am become more resistant to shopping at Target, Forever 21, or H&M for clothes because of a book I am reading called Overdressed: The Shockingly High Cost of Cheap Fashion that really puts all the fast trends into a interesting perspective. I have not finished it, but I like it so far!
Done venting for now. You styled the men's sweater really well btw;)

I can never bring myself to pay that much for anything since I'm in college and I have more important things to spend money on. When I DO shop for clothes at Target, you can bet that I'm only spending $30 MAX on one piece and it better shoes or a great dress!

I wasn't a huge fan of this collaboration either, and it was way overpriced…I do like the striped luggage though π You look super cute!

We don't have Target in Canada yet.. (coming soon)!! But I totally love your outfit!!!

Sad to hear the sweater is super uncomfortable! The look is really cute tho! I know exactly what you mean! I was so excited when I went to Target but was then disappointed with the pieces and the overall prices! I can't believe just weeks later it's all 70% off! I would definitely be disappointed if I paid full price for anything!

Glad to know that I'm not the only one who thought this whole NM + Target collab was a little strange. I was really looking forward to the pieces but was horribly underwhelmed when I finally saw it. What the heck about the dog bowl and leash?? I was expecting a lot but ended up not buying any of it. I debated on this sweater, and if it continues to go on sale I might pick it up. Did anyone else think that some of the women's sizing was really off? This collaboration, in my opinion, gave both Target and the designers a bad name to the community at large (at least mine) who shops at Target but has never heard of Marchesa….

Great review! I actually forgot all about the collab so thanks for the heads up on the sale prices. I haven't stepped into a Target for a few months so I'm eager to see what an Oscar De La Renta dog bowl actually looks like. I love shopping at target for fun quick fashion but the truth is, most of the time it's just a waste of my money. Most pieces I buy from there I only wear once or twice and then it all falls apart, so I wouldn't expect anything substantial from them even with the designer collabs. The sweater looks really cute, too bad it's of such bad quality. Think I might just pop on into target tomorrow.

I have to agree. I love Target to death, but I thought the collection was a total fail. You look adorable in that sweater though, great find!

I can totally relate! Sometimes I really like Target and other times I'm not impressed with the quality at all

Wow…I can't believe that the sweater feels that horrible! That's too bad! I'll be honest- I bought so many of the things but I found so many of them to be cute, like the Skaist Taylor furry vest and the Derek Lam leopard slippers.

I like the designer + Target collabs but always feel like everyone gets too excited. If the collections are good then everyone and their mom buys the clothes and then I feel like I'm just blending in with the crowd if I buy something. I wasn't that impressed with the NM collection. Like you said – overpriced and just…weird. The only thing I really liked was the Proenza sweatshirt (which I just bought for $8.99!) but it was never carried in my local Target which I thought was weird. I bought it online and I'm happy with the purchase.

you nailed my thoughts about the collection. I was so disappointed. I hope the Prabal Gurung collection that is coming out soon is better. I love the dresses and they seem more reasonably priced
